Katja Juhola presents a series of large-format works that invite contemplation of the ancient, culturally resonant forests of northwestern Finland. These are not mere landscapes; they are portals to a hidden dimension – the vital, subterranean network of mycorrhizal fungi and symbiotic life forms that bind the forest into a sentient community. This intricate web, often invisible to the human eye, becomes the central metaphor and visual revelation within these evocative works.
The artworks originate from places of profound significance: protected forest areas in northwestern Finland, historically used as summer pastures for livestock. These are landscapes layered by centuries of subtle human-nature interaction, places the artist has long experienced as realms of deep, almost sacred, magic. This essence is captured and reconstructed through a meticulously developed, multi-layered artistic process that mirrors the stratified complexity of the forest itself:
Painted Earth: The journey begins on canvas with a foundational layer of acrylic paint. This establishes the atmosphere – the filtered light, deep shadows, rich earthy tones of the soil, and a sense of ancient stillness.
Etched Memory (Translucent Veils): Over this painted background, delicate photographic prints on thin cotton are carefully applied. Sourced directly from the artist's cherished Finnish woodlands, these prints capture intimate fragments of reality: the intricate texture of bark, the velvety softness of moss, the gnarled strength of roots, the ethereal play of sunlight filtering through leaves. The transparency of the cotton allows the underlying painted layer to emerge and interact with the photographic image. This creates a dynamic dialogue between the artist's hand and the captured forest, a visual metaphor for the interwoven layers of perception, memory, and reality.
Veils of Color (Synthesis): Further layers of acrylic and oil paint are then applied. Translucent glazes and textured brushstrokes intertwine the photographic elements with the painted base, dissolving sharp boundaries. Representation merges with abstraction; the documentary detail of photography unites with the emotional expression of brushwork, echoing the natural fusion of the tangible and the mysterious that characterises the forest.
Revelation in Light (The Awakening of the Hidden Network): The final layer incorporates UV-reactive paint. Under specific ultraviolet (blue) light, this layer undergoes a magical transformation. Luminescent forms emerge – glowing threads, radiant nodes, hidden textures – making visible the mycorrhizal networks and the vibrant energy of the forest's interconnected life. This spectacular metamorphosis embodies the heart of the exhibition: the revelation of the vital, invisible connections that sustain the whole.
Each work is framed in one of three distinct tones of green fabric, a choice that consciously roots the pieces in the organic palette of their subject, reinforcing the feeling that the forest extends to embrace the viewer.
This body of work transcends traditional landscape painting, firmly placing itself within critical discourses on Posthumanism and the Anthropocene. Inspired by the mycorrhizal network – a form of decentralised, collaborative, and ancient intelligence that precedes and sustains human existence – Katja Juhola deliberately challenges anthropocentric views. The forest is not presented as a passive resource or picturesque backdrop, but as an active, complex, and deeply interconnected community. Humans are positioned as participants in this network, not its masters.
The specific historical context of the location – a protected area, shaped by low-impact seasonal coexistence between humans, animals, and the forest – serves as an eloquent counterpoint to the predatory dynamics typical of the Anthropocene era. It whispers of possible harmonies, now obscured by widespread ecological imbalance. The artistic process itself reinforces this conceptual perspective: the transparency of the paint emerging beneath the photograph and the dramatic revelation under UV light are powerful metaphors. They demand a shift in perspective, urging us to develop new ways of perceiving and understanding our profound entanglement with – and our responsibility towards – the living planet. The UV light, in an almost literal sense, illuminates the hidden connections we too often ignore.
Katja Juhola offers more than mere visual representations; she creates immersive sensory experiences. These works are meditations on depth, memory, and interconnectedness. They invite the viewer to look further, to perceive beyond the surface, to feel the hum of the forest's luminous, hidden network. In doing so, they prompt us to re-evaluate our place within the immense, fragile, and marvellous tapestry of life on Earth.
INVISIBLE CONNECTION
Katja Juhola presenta una serie di opere di grande formato, che invitano alla contemplazione delle antiche foreste, culturalmente risonanti, della Finlandia nordoccidentale. Non si tratta di semplici paesaggi; sono portali verso una dimensione nascosta – la rete vitale e sotterranea dei funghi micorrizici e delle forme di vita simbiotiche che legano la foresta in una comunità senziente. Questa trama intricata, spesso invisibile all’occhio umano, diventa la metafora centrale e la rivelazione visiva all’interno di queste opere evocative.
Le opere nascono da luoghi di profonda significanza: aree forestali protette nella Finlandia nordoccidentale, storicamente utilizzate come pascoli estivi per il bestiame. Sono paesaggi stratificati da secoli di sottile interazione uomo-natura, luoghi che l’artista ha a lungo vissuto come regni di magia profonda, quasi sacra. Questa essenza viene catturata e ricostruita attraverso un processo artistico meticolosamente sviluppato e multilivello, che rispecchia la complessità stratificata della foresta stessa:
Terra Dipinta: Il viaggio comincia sulla tela con uno strato fondativo di pittura acrilica. Questo stabilisce l’atmosfera – la luce filtrata, le ombre profonde, le tonalità terrose e ricche del suolo, il senso di antica quiete.
Memoria Incisa (Veli Traslucidi): Su questo fondo dipinto vengono accuratamente applicate sottili stampe fotografiche su un sottile cotone. Provenienti direttamente dai boschi finlandesi cari all’artista, queste stampe catturano frammenti intimi di realtà: la trama intricata della corteccia, la morbidezza vellutata del muschio, la forza nodosa delle radici, il gioco etereo della luce solare filtrata dalle foglie. La trasparenza del cotone permette allo strato pittorico sottostante di emergere e interagire con l’immagine fotografica. Ne nasce un dialogo dinamico tra la mano dell’artista e la foresta catturata, metafora visiva degli strati intrecciati di percezione, memoria e realtà.
Veli di Colore (Sintesi): Ulteriori strati di pittura acrilica e a olio vengono poi applicati. Velature traslucide e pennellate materiche intrecciano gli elementi fotografici con la base dipinta, dissolvendo i confini netti. La rappresentazione si fonde con l’astrazione; il dettaglio documentario della fotografia si unisce all’espressione emotiva della pennellata, riecheggiando la fusione naturale tra tangibile e misterioso che caratterizza la foresta.
Rivelazione nella Luce (Il Risveglio della Rete Nascosta): Lo strato finale incorpora pittura reattiva ai raggi UV. Sotto specifica luce ultravioletta (blu), questo strato subisce una trasformazione magica. Emergono forme luminescenti – fili brillanti, nodi radiosi, trame nascoste – che rendono visibili le reti micorriziche e l’energia vibrante della vita interconnessa della foresta. Questo mutamento spettacolare incarna il cuore della mostra: la rivelazione delle connessioni vitali e invisibili che sostengono il tutto.
Ogni opera è incorniciata in uno dei tre distinti toni di tessuto verde, una scelta che radica consapevolmente i pezzi nella palette organica del loro soggetto, rafforzando la sensazione che la foresta si estenda fino ad abbracciare lo spettatore.
Questo corpus di opere trascende la pittura paesaggistica tradizionale, collocandosi con decisione all’interno dei discorsi critici sul Postumanesimo e sull’Antropocene. Ispirata alla rete micorrizica – una forma di intelligenza decentralizzata, collaborativa e antichissima, che precede e sostiene l’esistenza umana – Katja Juhola sfida deliberatamente le visioni antropocentriche. La foresta non è presentata come risorsa passiva o scenografia pittoresca, ma come comunità attiva, complessa e profondamente interconnessa. L’essere umano è posizionato come partecipe di questa rete, non come suo padrone.
Il contesto storico specifico del luogo – un’area protetta, modellata da una convivenza stagionale a basso impatto tra uomo, animali e foresta – funge da contrappunto eloquente alle dinamiche predatorie tipiche dell’epoca dell’Antropocene. Sussurra di armonie possibili, oggi oscurate da un diffuso squilibrio ecologico. Lo stesso processo artistico rafforza questa prospettiva concettuale: la trasparenza della pittura che affiora sotto la fotografia e la drammatica rivelazione sotto la luce UV sono potenti metafore. Esigono un cambiamento di sguardo, spingendoci a sviluppare nuovi modi di percepire e comprendere il nostro profondo intreccio con – e la nostra responsabilità verso – il pianeta vivente. La luce UV, in senso quasi letterale, illumina le connessioni nascoste che troppo spesso ignoriamo.
Katja Juhola offre più di semplici rappresentazioni visive; crea esperienze sensoriali immersive. Queste opere sono meditazioni sulla profondità, sulla memoria e sull’interconnessione. Invitano lo spettatore a guardare oltre, a percepire al di là della superficie, a sentire il brulichio della rete luminosa e nascosta della foresta. Così facendo, ci spingono a rivalutare il nostro posto all’interno dell’immenso, fragile e meraviglioso arazzo della vita sulla Terra.
