Sean Mpetiwa (b. 2003, Harare, Zimbabwe) is a self-taught artist whose practice has developed within one of the most dynamic ecosystems of contemporary Zimbabwean art. He began his artistic journey at Mbare Art Space, working under the mentorship of established artists Moffat Takadiwa and Troy Makaza. He currently lives and works in Marondera, where he continues his collaboration with Makaza while refining a distinct and evolving visual language.

Mpetiwa presented his first group exhibition at the age of 19, exhibiting alongside prominent Zimbabwean artists such as Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude, Wycliffe Mundopa, and Tapfuma Gutsa. In 2023, he was selected for an artist residency at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, where he participated in two group exhibitions and presented a solo show. During this period, his work was nominated for Outstanding 2D Works at the National Arts Merit Awards, marking a significant recognition of his emerging contribution to the contemporary art scene.

Through vibrant colour palettes and expressive distortions of form, Sean Mpetiwa constructs a visual language that reflects the complexities of contemporary Zimbabwean youth. His work navigates the tension between tradition and modernity, engaging themes of identity, culture, and social commentary with a perspective that is both celebratory and critical.

Mpetiwa’s compositions function as generational portraits, translating lived experience into emotionally charged visual narratives. Scenes of everyday life, moments of joy, collective anxieties, and strategies of survival emerge as central motifs, offering an intimate yet expansive view of contemporary realities. In this way, his work moves beyond personal expression to become a shared testimony of a generation negotiating its place within a rapidly shifting cultural landscape.
