La Via Lattea and Oolalala Gallery present Artists & the Unknown, an evening dedicated to contemporary art as a space for exploration and dialogue.
The event, taking place on Wednesday, October 8, at 8:00 PM, features a screening of the film “Artists & the Unknown,” offered by Art21, followed by a conversation with playwright and author Valentina Diana and visual artist Roberta Toscano. Together, they will open a shared space for questions, visions, and reflections on art and the present.
The film features testimonies by Linda Goode Bryant, Josephine Halvorson, Rose B. Simpson, Sarah Sze, and Michael Rakowitz — five artists who approach the unknown as a generative force and a field of possibility. Through their experiences, Artists & the Unknown invites viewers to reflect on how mystery, complexity, and unpredictability can become tools for creation, knowledge, and freedom.
In an age that demands quick answers and reassuring certainties, Artists & the Unknown invites us to dwell within uncertainty and to recognize the value of not knowing.
Rather than offering solutions, the film opens pathways: through the voices of the artists, it reveals how art is born not from control but from the willingness to lose oneself. Here, the unknown is not a threat but a possibility — a place where intuition, risk, and trust meet. Art21, a New York–based nonprofit organisation, is internationally recognised for its documentary films and programs devoted to contemporary art.
Through its Screening Society initiative, Art21 invites communities worldwide to gather, watch, and discuss films about the artists of our time — promoting dialogue, creative thinking, and open access to visual culture.
This event marks the first in a new film series dedicated to contemporary art, organised in collaboration with Art21.
Each screening will host guests from diverse fields and disciplines, fostering a broad, inclusive dialogue that transcends professional and social boundaries.

L’appuntamento, in programma mercoledì 8 ottobre alle ore 20, propone la proiezione del film “Artists & the Unknown”, in collaborazione con Art21, seguirà una conversazione con la drammaturga e autrice Valentina Diana e l’artista visiva Roberta Toscano, che offrirà al pubblico uno spazio condiviso per domande, visioni e riflessioni sull’arte e sul presente.

Il film non offre soluzioni, ma apre varchi: attraverso le voci degli artisti, mostra come l’arte possa nascere non dal controllo, ma dalla disponibilità a perdersi.
L’ignoto, in questo contesto, non è una minaccia ma una possibilità — il luogo in cui si incontrano intuizione, rischio e fiducia.

Con il progetto Screening Society, Art21 invita comunità di tutto il mondo a incontrarsi per guardare e discutere film sugli artisti del nostro tempo, promuovendo il dialogo e l’accesso libero alla cultura visiva.
L’incontro inaugura una rassegna di film dedicati all’arte contemporanea realizzata in collaborazione con Art21. Ad ogni appuntamento saranno invitati ospiti provenienti da diversi ambiti e discipline, per costruire un dialogo ampio, trasversale e inclusivo, capace di superare i confini dei ruoli professionali e sociali.
Un’occasione per condividere sguardi e conoscenze sull’arte e sul quotidiano, aprendo lo spazio a una visione comune, viva e in continua trasformazione.
